SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  –  Seniors Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) and David Kurker (Needham, Mass.) and graduate student Aidan Whitis (Gorham, Maine) each placed third in their respective weight classes to highlight a fifth place finish by the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team at the 2021 Doug Parker Invitational Saturday afternoon at Springfield College.
 
Southern Maine scored 80 points as a team to place fifth out of 14 competing teams.  The United States Coast Guard Academy placed first overall with 162.5 points, followed by Centenary with 99.   
 
Husky Highlights:
165: Kurker earned a third place finish with a 3-1 mark, including a thrilling 3-2 decision over Springfield's Jake Harry in the third place match.  Unranked in NEWA, Kurker scored with win over Harry, who is presently ranked seventh in the region. 
174:  Senior Juan Vernaza (Miramar, Fla.) placed fifth, bouncing back from a third round loss to win three straight and earn a spot on the podium.  In the fifth place match, Vernaza took a hard-earned 7-5 decision over Aidan Fernandez. 
184: Competing at 184, Whitis earned a third place finish completing his tourney with a 3-1 record including three  wins by fall.  Whitis opened with a pin in 57 seconds over Bridgewater's Sean McCullough, and then pinned Trinity's Isaiah Bailey in 2:37.  Whitis bounced back from his only loss, and 8-1 decision to Coast Guard Paul Detwiler (ranked 1 in NEWA and four in the nation) with his third pin of the day, 1:57, over Dante Gutbrod of Williams.
285: Peavey continued the strong start to his 2021-22 season posting a 3-1 record with three wins by fall.  Peavey opened with a win by fall in 1:42 over Rhode Island College's Michael Alfonso, and then pinned Williams Tommy Goodwin in 2:31.  Peavey bounced back from a championship semifinal loss to earn third with a win by fall in 1:18 over RIC's Travis Manick. Peavey is presently ranked second in the region, and is in the National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) individual rankings at No. 15.
