GORHAM, ME – The University of Southern Maine women's cross country team will travel to Castleton, VT for the 2021 Little East Conference (LEC) Cross Country Championship race on Saturday, October 30th.
Participating Programs: At the meet, the Huskies will face eight LEC opponents: Castleton University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Rhode Island College, UMass-Boston, UMass-Dartmouth, and Western Connecticut State University.
USM at the Little East Conference Championship: Since the first LittleEast Conference championship race, the Huskies have won six conference championships, including the inaugural race in 1988. In that same period, Southern Maine has produced 10 individual champions, most recently Molly Carl in 2012. During the most recent championship race during the 2019 season, the Huskies placed sixth as a team with 150 points. The Huskies top returning runner from that squad is senior Rachel Raymond (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) who finished 47th. This will be the Huskies' first Little East Conference cross country championship meet under the guidance of head coach Rob Whitten, who took over the program after the 2019 cross country season.
Scouting the Huskies: The Huskies have competed in five races coming into the conference championships, most recently posting a seventh-place finish at the Suffolk Invitational on October 16.
Time and Location: Saturday, October 30th at 12pm at Castleton University.
Husky Spotlight: Freshman Olivia Mosca (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) has had a standout rookie campaign, earning individual wins in two of the Huskies' races. She bested the field in the Huskies' first race of the season against Husson University, traversing the three-kilometer course in 11:25.80. Mosca picked up another individual win at the Thomas Individual, covering five kilometers in 23:42.6. In the Huskies' most recent race, Mosca finished second in a field of 106 runners. The Little East Conference named Mosca the conference rookie runner of the week after running to a 25th place finish at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational that featured teams across all three collegiate divisions.
