Box Score Junior Goalie Makes 32 Saves for His Fourth Career Shutout
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior goalie Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) stopped 32 shots to backstop the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in non-conference men's ice hockey action Sunday at the USM Ice Arena.
D'Aloisio was solid throughout the game stopping 11 shots in the opening period, 10 in the second and 11 more in the third. His best save came in the third period when he robbed rookie Ethan Kimball (Holden, Mass.) from point-blank range. The shutout was the second of the season for D'Aloisio, and the fourth of his career.
The win extends Southern Maine's unbeaten string to three (2-0-1), and improves its record to 4-6-2 overall. USM is 4-1-2 in its last seven games after an 0-5 start to the season. Bowdoin, winners in four of its last five games, fall back to .500 at 5-5-0 overall. The two teams will meet in the second half of their annual home-and-home series at Bowdoin on January 14.
The Huskies' shutout of the Polar Bears was their first in the 35-game series dating back to February 1994. Bowdoin now leads the series 24-8-3.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 at 6:38 of the first period when senior Ethan Bassile (Scarborough, Maine) tipped home a pass from junior Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.). Bassile deflected a Bowdoin pass in his defensive zone to Papayoanou, then hustled his way into the play to create a partial 2-on-1. Papayoanou's pass back was right on the tape allowing Bassile to tip it past Bowdoin junior goalie Kyle St. Denis (Katonah, N.Y.) as he was being hauled down.
With D'Aloisio protecting the one-goal advantage, the Huskies finally got an insurance goal in the third period. Sophomore Adam Withers (Kenora, Ontario) collected a turnover in the Bowdoin zone and went in on St. Denis. St. Denis stopped Withers' first shot, but the second-year center was able to stuff home the rebound.
The Polar Bears had two golden opportunities in the second period to erase the Huskies' 1-0 lead. Senior Max Ginsburg (Needham, Mass.) was awarded a penalty shot at 4:10 after being hooked on a breakaway. Ginsburg would stickhandle left, but with D'Aloisio staying square, the shot from a tight angle clanked off the post.
Later in the period, the Polar Bears had a 5-on-3 advantage for 23 seconds during a stretch of 3:37 where they had the power play. However, the Huskies defense was able to kill off the two minor penalties.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 32-16 advantage in shots on goal. St. Denis made 14 saves before being lifted for the extra attacker with 2:45 to play.
Southern Maine is back in action this coming Friday (7 p.m.) hosting New England College for a New England Hockey Conference game. Bowdoin will be at home, also on Friday (7 p.m.), playing NESCAC foe Hamilton College.
