Kalilwa Goals Lead USM to a 2-2 2OT Draw With Bates

LEWISTON, Maine  –  Senior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) recorded a brace for the second time this week as the University of Southern Maine Huskies battled their way to a 2-2 double overtime draw with the Bates College Bobcats in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Russell Field.

The draw leaves Southern Maine at 4-3-1, concluding a 1-1-1 week for the Huskies. Bates is now 1-4-1 with the result. 

In 34 meetings between the two schools, Southern Maine has claimed just one win, and the draw is the first result since the 1988 season in which the Huskies did not take a loss. 

ON THE PITCH: 

All four goals in the contest game in the opening 18 minutes before both teams went scoreless for the next 82 for the tie score. 

Bates' Sarah DiPillo scored both Bobcats goals, including the first goal of the game to put her team ahead 1-0 in the second minute.  

Both of Kalilwa's goals in the contest were equalizers to DiPillo's goals in the contest.  Kalilwa's first goal of the game came in 16th minute when she completed an assist from sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon). Allain fed the ball from the midfield to Kalilwa who snuck in behind the Bates' defense beating he keeper to the ball and scoring on an empty net. 

DiPillo gave the Bobcats the advantage again just a minute later with her second goal of the season in the 17th minute following an assist from Adelaide Armah.  Armah's initial shot was stopped by Husky freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine), but DiPillo cleaned up the loose ball for the 2-1 lead. 

USM wasted little time on the restart, scoring just 12 seconds after kick off.  Allain thread another well-paced through ball and found Kalilwa for her second goal of the game and fifth of the season at 17:01.  

INSIDE THE STATS: 

            Bates held a large lead in shots over USM, 30-11, but Gorman was up to the task making 13 saves.  Gorman's 13 saves are her second highest total this season. Bates also had a 10-4 lead in corner kicks.  Bobcat goalkeeper Katherine Nuckols made six saves.  

NEWS & NOTES: 

            Kalilwa's two goals in today's contest gives her 15 for her career, while Allain's two assists give her 10 for her career.  Allain is tied for sixth in career assists.

            Southern Maine is back at home on Wednesday (4:00 pm) on Wednesday in another non-conference game.
