GORHAM, Maine – Freshmen
Kate Hester (Austin, Texas) and Maya Ingels (Saint Paul, Minn./Saint Paul Central) each scored their first intercollegiate goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 shut out win over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Southern Maine (2-1)
Facing each other 10 times in program history, Southern Maine improves to 9-0-1 in the series against the Mariners. Southern Maine defeated Maine Maritime 4-1 in the 2025 match in Castine. Maine Maritime earned a 1-1 draw during the 2018 season. The Huskies have outscored Maine Maritime 34-5 in the all-time series. Today's shutout is the first since a 7-0 win over MMA in 2022.
How It Happened:
- Outshooting the Mariners 17-3 in the first half, Southern Maine broke through for its first goal of the game in the ninth minute when Hester bounced on a ricocheting ball in the box. MMA goalkeeper Essa Tessing kept the score at 1-0 the rest of the half, making eight of her 11 saves in the game.
- Southern Maine made it 2-0 early in the second half. Freshman Lizzy Neal (Parker, Colo./Lutheran) made a strong move on the right side of the field and carried the ball toward the box before sending in a ball to a running Ingles who touched it home to the left corner of the net.
- Southern Maine put a third into the net off of the head of sophomore Lexi Morin (Brunswick, Maine) following a corner kick service from freshman Mia Wetzel (Oviedo, Fla.), but it was called off.
- Freshmen Elisse Hinton (Converse, Texas) had a quality strike off of a corner-kick, but hit her volley off of the cross bar.
- MMA had several chances in the game, primarily from midfielder Hayley Stoddard, but the Huskies' goalkeeper tandem of freshmen McKenzie Vano (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Madi Cook (Essex, Mass.) each made strong saves. Cook made a diving stop in the 90th minute on an attempt from Sophia Hernandez to keep the shutout.
