GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Alexandria Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) and junior Adela Kaililwa (Lewiston, Maine) each had a goal and an assist to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-2 win over the Morrisville State Mustangs in the third game of the 2018 USM Women's Soccer Invitational Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Earning its second consecutive win to open its 2018 campaign, Southern Maine is 2-0, and has outscored its opponents 15-2.
Despite outshooting the Mustangs 18-7 in the opening half, the Huskies found themselves in a 2-2 deadlock headed into the second half. USM scored first taking a 1-0 lead on one-time volley from senior Olivia Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) to complete a well-placed service from Kalilwa in the eighth minute. The goal was the second of the season for Mull.
Morrisville rallied to knot the game up at 1-1 after sophomore Jessica McGee (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) rocketed in a shot from the top off the box after having the ball dropped her feet from freshman Angelina Rinaldi (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) 18:34 into the half. The Huskies quickly reclaimed their lead on the restart when senior Emma Denison (South Portand, Maine) scored the first of her two goals in the game 13 seconds later at 18:47. Southern Maine's lead was short-lived, however, as Morrisville sophomore Shay Franklin (North Norwich, N.Y./Sherburne-Earlville) collected a loose ball in the box in the 23rd minute, slotting home a goal for a 2-2 game.
The score remained in a two-goal deadlock until 15 minutes into the second half when Kalilwa broke through for the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute. Kalilwa ran onto a through ball from Allain and then beat the Morrisville keeper to the left side of the net for her second goal of the season. Allain followed with a goal of her own in the 68th knocking in her fourth goal of the season, finishing an assist from junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine). Ahead 4-2, Southern Maine's Dennison capped the Huskies' scoring and closed the door on the game collecting a loose ball in the box in the final seconds of regulation for the 5-2 final.
USM senior Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made two saves in the win. Morrisville senior Brianna Sorriento (Wynantskill, N.Y./Troy) absorbed the loss, allowing four goals and making 12 saves in 74:16 of action. Freshman Lydia Young (Cuyler, N.Y./Fabius Pompey) played the final 15:44 making three saves and allowing one goal.
