Curry Downs Southern Maine 19-6

            MILTON, Mass. -- The Curry College men's lacrosse team exploded for seven second-quarter goals to take a commanding halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 19-6, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

            The win was the fourth straight for the Colonels improving their overall record to 4-2.  The Huskies dropped their third straight to slip to 1-3 overall.

            Junior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) led a balanced Curry offense with three goals and two assists apiece.  Senior Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) added two goals and one assist, and senior Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and sophomore Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip) had two goals.

            Junior Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) led the Huskies with three goals and one assist.  Senior Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and rookies Joe Cullinan (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) and Steve Gilbert (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) had the other USM goals.  Cullinan also had a team-high four ground balls.

            Junior Josh Teller (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) picked up his fourth win of the season in the Curry cage making seven saves over the opening 37:28.  Freshman Jake Sangiovanni (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) came on to make eight stops in 22.20.  USM senior Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) stopped 14 shots over 49:33 before giving way to freshman Griffin Hanson (Dover, N.H.) who had two saves.

            The teams traded goals over the opening 12 minutes of the first quarter before Curry took the lead for good on a goal from Cashin that made 3-2.  The Colonels would add another before the end of the quarter to be up 4-2 after 15 minutes.

            In the second quarter, the Colonels outscored the Huskies 7-2 to build a commanding 11-4 lead by halftime.  Stebbins and Newell each scored twice in the quarter, and Fallon and Serra converted late in the quarter while the Colonels were a man up.  USM was only able to counter with Leonardo's third goal of the game, and Gilbert's marker in the middle third of the quarter.

            Curry outscored USM 4-1 in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away in the second half.

            The Colonels finished with a wide 54-32 advantage in shots and 37-22 edge in ground balls.  Junior Zach White (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran), who had a goal and two assists, dominated at the center X winning 9 of 10 faceoffs and collected a game-high 11 ground balls.  Curry won 18 of the 27 faceoffs in the game.

            Southern Maine hits the road again on Thursday (7 p.m.) to play at Saint Joseph's College.  Curry tries to make it five in a row on Saturday (4 p.m.) hosting Norwich University.
