Huskies Fall to Vikings 18-8

SALEM, Mass. – James Tatro scored seven times and had three assists for the Salem State University Vikings on Tuesday night in an 18-8 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action. Junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) led the Huskies with a career-high four goals and an assist. His goal total is tied for the most in a game by a Husky this season with junior Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire), who scored four in the Huskies' game against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on February 28.
 
Junior Pat O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) also had multiple points with O'Driscoll recording a goal and two assists and Smith scoring twice. Senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) also scored a goal and Coley had an assist. Junior Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) made 20 saves to match his career-high but took the loss.
 
For Salem State, Landon Rice recorded four goals and two assists and Joseph Turpin recorded two goals and two assists. Ryan Cohen made seven saves to earn the win.

Despite tonight's loss, the Huskies lead the all-time series 15-7.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Brycen Wolfahrt (2-10), 60:00, 18 goals allowed, 20 saves
Salem State: Ryan Cohen (8-6), 60:00, eight goal allowed, seven saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Salem State scored five unanswered goals int eh opening quartet with Tatro accounting for two of the scores and assisting on another by Rice.
  • Following a Salem State goal in the first minute of the second quarter, the Huskies broke through with a goal by O'Driscoll. O'Driscoll then assisted on goal by Gaulrapp a little over three minutes later to cut the Salem State lead to 6-2. Gaulrapp then scored two more goals after the Vikings extended the lead to 7-2 on another score by Tatro. A goal by Rice gave the Vikings an 8-4 lead at the half.
  • The Vikings pulled away by outscoring the Huskies 6-2 in the third quarter behind three goals by Tatro, two by Rice and one from Connor Vittands. Southern Maine had goals from Bridges and Smith in the quarter.
  • Smith and Gaulrapp each scored goals in the final quarter as the Vikings outscored the Huskies 4-2 for the 18-8 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Salem State had a 19-10 lead in faceoff wins, a 44-23 lead in ground balls and 38-23 in shots on goal.
  • Junior Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) led the Huskies in ground balls with five and caused turnovers with three.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will celebrate Senior Day on Friday evening before their 4:00 pm home game against Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
