WestConn Defeats Southern Maine 25-5

DANBURY, Conn. – Cody Suhr and Tristan McMahon recorded six points each as the Western Connecticut State University Wolves defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 25-5 in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Suhr scored six times, while McMahon had five goals and an assist. Junior Pat O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport) had two points each of the Huskies. O'Driscoll had a goal and an assist and McCarthy assisted on two goals.
 
Southern Maine also had goals from junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine), junior Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic), junior Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) and senior James Kastrinakis (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic).
 
Nicholas Saragossi (three) and Michael Zapatka (two) joined Surh and McMahon has Wolves multiple goals. WestConn had 13 different players with goals.
 
Jake Kelly was the winning goalie for WestConn with two saves and a goal allowed. Junior Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies after making six saves and allowing 15 goals. Each side used four goalies in the contest.

How It Happened:
  • The Wolves struck first with a goal by McMahon 1:11 into the first quarter before the Huskies tied the game on a goal by Manning from McCarthy with 11:34 left. The Wolves then closed out the quarter on an 11-0 run that featured six goals by Suhr.
  • WestConn's run continued into halftime as they outscored the Huskies 9-0 in the second quarter to take a 21-1 lead at the half.
  • Following a pair of WestConn goals, Kastrinakis ended Huskies' scoreless streak with his third goal of the season with O'Driscoll assisting. However, WestConn would score two more times to extend the lead to 25-2.
  • Zimerle made a career-high five saves and held the Wolves scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Huskies scored three times in the quarter with goals by Gaulrapp, Coley and O'Driscoll. Sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) assisted on Coley's goal. O'Driscoll's goal came with the Huskies on the up and was assisted by McCarthy.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • WestConn led 39-9 in shots on goal and 23-9 in faceoff wins.
  • Junior Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) led the Huskies in ground balls with three.

The Huskies will play again on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm at Salem State University.
