Southern Maine, Castleton Skate to 3-3 Overtime Tie

Box Score

Norman, Murphy and Dundas Score USM Goals

GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie forward Glenn Wiswell (Berwick, Maine) scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal with 7:15 remaining in regulation as the visiting Castleton University Spartans overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to forge a 3-3 overtime tie with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.

With the game tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of play, Southern Maine scored twice in a span of 2:13 to take a 3-1 lead.  Sophomore Brendan Murphy (St. Peters, Mo.) broke the tie with a nifty individual rush from his own zone to score his first marker of the season at 7:51.

The Huskies went on the power play shortly there after and made the Spartans pay when a shot from the blue line by sophomore Tristan Dundas (Chilliwack, B.C.) found its way through traffic and past Spartan senior goalie Ryan Mulder (Ottawa, Ontario) for his second of the campaign and a 3-1 lead at 10:04.

Castleton quickly began its comeback when rookie Ryan Ng (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) scored on a 25-foot wrist shot into the top left corner at 10:56.  Matching minor penalties after the goal left the teams playing four aside, and USM was whistled for another infraction at 12:20 giving Castleton a 4-on-3 advantage.

Moving the puck smartly around offensive zone, sophomore Mark Shroyer (Fresno, Calif.) passed the puck to Wiswell deep in the left-wing circle and the rookie forward picked the top corner over USM rookie goalie Anthony D'Aloisio's (Frisco, Texas) right shoulder.

Southern Maine had a late power play, but could not take advantage to score a go-ahead goal.  The Huskies had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal in the five-minute overtime.

In the opening period, Shroyer gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 4:00 mark.  Senior Brett Norman (Dawson Creek, B.C.) notched his second goal of the season for the home side tipping home a shot from rookie Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, Quebec) at 6:53.

Southern Maine piled up a 31-17 edge in shots on goal in the game.  Mulder stopped 28 shots in the Castleton net.  D'Aloisio made 14 saves for USM.  Castleton converted on 1 of 2 power-play opportunities while USM was 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

The tie leaves Southern Maine with a 2-9-4 record overall, and a 2-5-3 mark in NEHC games.  Castleton is now 5-9-3 overall and 1-8-1 in the conference.  The two sides meet one more time this season on February 3.

The Huskies travel to Boston next Friday (7:00 p.m.) for a game against the University of Massachusetts Boston.  Castleton will be at home the same day (7:00 p.m.) hosting Hobart College.
