GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) earned the University of Southern Maine women's tennis team's lone point Saturday as the Huskies fell to the visiting Worcester State University Lancers 8-1 in a Little East Conference match played at the Costello Sports Complex field house. The match was moved indoors due to wet courts at Gorham High School.
Jordan earned USM's point taking the #1 singles matches when WSU sophomore Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) retired. Jordan had taken the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6), and was leading 4-3 in the second at the time.
The Lancers, 7-2 overall and 4-1 in LEC play, jumped out to a 3-0 lead sweeping the three doubles matches. Singles wins by junior Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and senior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) at #2 and #3 respectively clinched the victory for the visitors. Khafaga downed USM senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine), and Silk dispatched junior Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area), in straight sets.
Southern Maine is back on the courts on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) traveling to the University of Massachusetts Boston for an LEC match. Worcester State will be at home on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting in-state rival Salem State University in an LEC match. That match will be played at Wachusett Regional High School.
