Southern Maine Earns First Win, Defeats Salem State 6-3

 

            GORHAM, Maine  - Freshman Andy MacEachern (Nashua, N.H./Merrimack) gutted out a key 7-5 6-2 win at third singles to help propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to its first win of the season with a 6-3 victory over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon.

            The Huskies' earned first year head coach Eric Haase '94 the first win of his collegiate coaching career and improved to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the Little East.  Salem State drops to 2-9 and 1-2 in the conference.

            MacEachern defeated senior Luke Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.) to score a pivotal point for the Huskies as USM won four out of six singles points.  USM led the match 2-1 after doubles play as the tandem of senior Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) and junior Samuel Holland (Falmouth, Maine) remained undefeated in LEC action with an 8-1 win at first doubles.

            Curley went on to score a 6-2, 6-3 win over SSU sophomore Chen Chen (Lawrence, Mass.) at first singles, while Holland downed freshman Mitchell Dyer (North Attleboro, Mass.)  6-2, 5-7, 7-6 in second singles.  Curley, a three-time All-LEC singles player, is now 4-2 at first singles and 3-0 against conference opponents.

            Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at UMass Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match.
