Huskies Host UMass Boston on Tuesday
WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Worcester State University Lancers swept past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-0, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Lancers' overall record to 4-3, and 2-1 in conference play. The Huskies drop to 1-6 overall and remain winless in the conference at 0-4.
Worcester State swept through the three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Senior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass./Quabog Regional) and junior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) took the number one doubles match 8-5 over freshman Mackenzie Colby (Southport, Maine/Boothbay Region) and sophomore Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) to lead the Lancers.
Jankins and Silk came back to post straight-set victories at number one and three singles respectively. Jankins defeated Colby 6-1, 6-0 while Silk knocked off Jordan by the same scores.
The best match of the afternoon came at number six singles where WSU rookie Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) held off USM sophomore Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Southern Maine is back on the courts on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) hosting the University of Massachusetts Boston at Gorham High School. Worcester State will travel to Salem State University on Tuesday for an LEC match.
