Huskies Play St. Joseph's at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Wednesday
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore David Borovsky (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills) snapped a 7-7 tie midway through the fourth quarter to help the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-7 in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday night at the ECSU Mansfield Complex.
The Warriors have now won four straight games to improve to 5-4 overall. The Huskies have dropped their last three games to fall to 4-3 overall. The game was the LEC opener for both sides.
Borovsky took a feed from junior Nick Fernandes (Fairfield, Conn.) and beat USM sophomore goalie Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) for his seventh goal of the season with 8:07 to play and an 8-7 Warrior lead. Senior Cody Carbone (North Reading, Mass.) scored a man-up goal for the Warriors with 2:17 remaining to secure the victory.
Eastern Connecticut received goals from eight different players. Senior Liam Murphy (Dover, N.H.) was the lone repeat scorer. Senior Dan Vasquez (Newington, Conn.) had three points on one goal and two assists. Senior goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, Mass.) earned his fifth win of the season making 11 saves.
USM senior Jeff Urmston (Bellingham, Mass.) led all scorers with four goals. Sophomore Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had two goals and one assist, and junior Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) had a goal and three assists. Bessette stopped 13 shots.
The Huskies erased a 1-0 deficit with three straight first-period goals. DelGiudice tied the game at 1-1 before Urmston scored a pair of goals to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead after one quarter.
Eastern sophomore Harrison Urda (Milford, N.H.) and Fernandes bracketed Urmston's third goal in the second quarter to leave the Huskies with a 4-3 advantage at halftime.
The home side scored twice in the opening seven minutes of the third quarter as senior Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, Mass.) and Murphy found the net. Urmston's final goal tied the game at 5-5 with 4:19 to play.
Murphy's second marker and an unassisted goal from Vasquez gave ECSU a 7-5 lead less than three minutes into the final period. DelGiudice responded for the Huskies scoring off a feed from junior Keegan Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) at 12:24, and Wing tied the game for the fourth time with 9:40 to play.
Eastern Connecticut finished with a 40-27 edge in shots, and a 31-20 margin in ground balls. Eastern junior midfielder Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) won 12 of 19 faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls.
Southern Maine will play Saint Joseph's College at Fitzpatrick Stadium (Portland, Maine) in its next game on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.). Eastern Connecticut is off until next Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when it plays at Salem State University.
