GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Samuel Holland (Falmouth, Maine) earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at fourth singles to break a 4-4 tie to deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies its second 5-4 victory in two days defeating the Castleton Univesity Spartans in a non-conference men's tennis match.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 5-0 overall. The loss is the second straight for Castleton and drops the Spartans to 6-2 on the season.
Despite taking a 1-0 win at first doubles with a win by senior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine), 8-2, over the Castleton tandem of juniors Seth Marcil (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Kevin Rosset (Crans-Montana, Switzerland), the Huskies trailed the Spartans 2-1 after the doubles points. The Spartans picked up wins at second and third doubles.
Adams took the first singles point, defeating Marcil in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, earning his 32nd consecutive singles victory, before the Spartans won the fifth and sixth singles matches to move ahead 4-2. Senior Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) took a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win at third singles to knot the score up at 4-4 before Holland delivered the victory for USM. Holland downed his opponent junior Quentin Barthe for the win keeping his team undefeated so far this season.
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action when it hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Castleton hosts Green Mountain on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
