WATERVILLE, Maine – Captains senior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) earned a convincing 8-2 win at the top of the doubles lineup to score the first points of the match to set the tone as the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis rolled to a 6-3 season-opening, non-conference win over the Thomas College Terriers Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Huskies, the two-time defending Little East Conference Champions (2014, 2015) begin their 2016 season at 1-0. The loss is the sixth straight for the Terriers who are now 0-6.
Adams and Curley defeated the TC tandem of senior Tyler Small (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) and sophomore Zach Disch (Waterville, Maine) as USM won two out of the three available doubles points. Thomas snagged a point at the third spot as USM did not submit a team. Senior Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Samuel Holland (Falmouth, Maine) earned an 8-3 win at second doubles downing Terriers' freshmen Ross Munn (Brunswick, Maine) and Nate Philbrook (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside).
In singles action, the Huskies won the first four points on the ladder led by a 6-1, 6-2 win by Adams over Small at the top of the order. TC's Philbrook earned a point at fifth singles battling back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over senior Sebastian Taylor (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little). The Huskies also forfeited a point at sixth singles.
USM returns to action on Friday (4:00 p.m.) when its hosts Colby-Sawyer in a non-conference match.
