Box Score Sherman, Burris Each Score Two Goals
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team scored a season-high six goals Saturday en route to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Nichols College Bison in New England Hockey Conference play at the USM Ice Arena.
The win snapped an 11-game winless stretch (0-11-1) for the Huskies who improved to 3-15-2 overall and 2-9-2 in league play. The Bison fell to 3-17-0 overall and 1-11-0 in the conference.
Senior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore Emilee Burris (Brookfield, N.S.) each had two goals and an assist to lead the Huskies' offensive output. Senior Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H.) and junior Lynn Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) had a goal and an assist. Rookie Tawni Mohler (McCall, Idaho) and junior Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) each chipped in a pair of assists. Sophomore goalie Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) stopped nine shots to record her first career shutout.
Sophomore Lindsay O'Connell (Danvers, Mass.) stopped 25 shots in nearly 49 minutes of action before being relieved by rookie Lauren Bennett (Chicago, Ill.). Bennett had five saves over the final 11:09.
Sherman staked the home side to a 2-0 lead in the first period with her seventh and eighth goals of the season. Her first marker came when she deposited the rebound of a blocked shot behind O'Connell at 2:47. The second goal came in the final minute of the period as her right-wing shot knuckled over O'Connell's glove and under the crossbar.
Burris scored the only goal in the middle period as she fired home the rebound of a shot by Mohler. Couture also picked up an assist on the play.
The Huskies put the game away in the third period as Boucher scored her second of the season off assists from Couture and senior Kaleigh Heath (Jericho, Vt.) to make it 4-0 at 8:51. Kozlowski and Burris added goals in the final 2:09 to account for the final tally.
Southern Maine outshot Nichols 35-9 in the game and converted one of four power play opportunities. Nichols was 0 for 3 with the extra skater.
Southern Maine hits the road next weekend for a pair of league games in Vermont against nationally ranked foes Norwich University on Friday and Castleton University on Saturday. Nichols has a rescheduled home game against the University of Massachusetts Boston on Wednesday.
