Southern Maine, Colby Skate to 2-2 Overtime Tie

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) stopped 26 shots, including four in overtime, as the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies skated to a 2-2 tie against the Colby College Mules in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday evening at Alfond Rink.

The tie left the Huskies, winless in their last four games (0-3-1), with a 5-7-1 overall record.  The Mules, 2-1-2 in their last five outings, are now 4-4-3 overall.

Sophomore Brett Norman (Dawson Creek, B.C.) and senior captain PM Lapointe (St. Georges, Que.) scored for Southern Maine.  Senior Daniel Mattsson (Uppsala, Sweden) had a pair of assists.

Juniors Devin Albert (Reading, Mass.) and Kevin Doherty (Wakefield, Mass.) tallied goals for the Mules.  Sophomore goalie Emerson Verrier (New York, N.Y.) recorded 15 saves.

Norman gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 2:39 of the first period netting his second goal of the season with a shot through a screen after assists from Mattsson and senior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ont.).  Albert equalized for the Mules with a power-play goal less than four minutes later.

Despite being held to just two shots in the second period, it was the Huskies who scored the lone goal of the frame.  Lapointe gave the Huskies' the lead again with his second goal of the campaign, coming on the power play, midway through the period from Mattsson and sophomore Lucas Branin (Philadelphia, Penn.).

Doherty tied the game with his first goal of the season less than three minutes into the third period when his shot was redirected off a USM defender's skate past Shapiro.  Senior Chris Kennedy (Sherborn, Mass.) and junior Colin Reilly (Pelham, N.Y.) picked up the assists.

Colby had two golden opportunities to net a game-winning goal being awarded a power play late in regulation, and again with 1:58 to play in overtime, but USM was able to kill off both situations.  After Albert's first period power-play marker, the Huskies were able to kill off five Colby power plays.

Southern Maine returns to New England Hockey Conference play this Friday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Skidmore College.  Colby will be at home on Friday (7:00 p.m.) against NESCAC rival Hamilton College.
