Fast Start Lifts Bowdoin Past Southern Maine 4-1

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored three goals in the opening 10:11 of the game and went on to post a 4-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday night at Watson Arena.

The win was the fourth straight for the surging Polar Bears who improved to 8-7-3 overall.  The Polar Bears also swept the teams home-and-home series for the second straight year and are unbeaten in their last nine games (8-0-1) against the Huskies.  The Huskies dropped to 5-13-1 on the season.

Sophomore Matt Lison (Venetia, Penn.) had a hand in all four Bowdoin goals assisting on the opening two goals, and then scoring the final two for a four-point night.  Junior Mitch Barrington (Cambridge, Ontario) and senior Matt Rubinoff (Oakville, Ontario) scored the opening two goals.  Rubinoff also picked up an assist, and rookie Chris Wallace (Neconset, N.Y.) dished off two assists.  Sophomore goalie Peter Cronin (Norwell, Mass.) earned his seventh win of the season stopping 32 shots.

Sophomore Patrick Magliano (Pelham, N.H.) had the Huskies lone goal converting a feed from rookie Jimmy Currier (Middleton, Mass.) in the first period.  Sophomore Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) rebounded from a shaky start to make 24 saves.

The Polar Bears took advantage of an early 5-on-3 power play to take a 1-0 lead at 3:37 as Barrington beat Shapiro from the top of the left faceoff circle.

Rubinoff doubled the home side's lead just over six minutes later potting the rebound of a Wallace shot.  Sixteen seconds later, Lison scored his first goal of the night to make it 3-0.

Magliano responded for the Huskies at 11:29 of the period with his third goal of the season depositing the rebound of Currier's shot behind Cronin.  That would be the last goal scored until Lison tallied an unassisted empty-net marker with 48 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Huskies had a 33-28 edge in shots on goal, including a 10-0 advantage in a scoreless second period.

Southern Maine travels to Boston on Friday (7:00 p.m.) to take on the nationally-ranked University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in a New England Hockey Conference contest. Bowdoin is off until February 5 (7:00 p.m.) when it travels to Amherst College.
