Manhattanville Rallies in Third Period to Down USM 3-2

RYE, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kristi Peters (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation to give the Manhattanville College Valiants a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference game Friday at the Playland Ice Casino.

The win was the second straight for the Valiants, and improved their record to 5-7-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the conference.  The Huskies dropped their third straight one-goal game, and sixth consecutive game overall, to fall to 2-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the league.

Manhattanville overcame a 1-0 deficit heading into the third period by outscoring Southern Maine 3-1 over the final 20 minutes.  Senior Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H.) tied the game at 2:31 with her fifth goal of the season.  Just over two minutes later, rookie Katherine Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y.), who helped set up the Herbert goal, put the Valiants into the lead for the first time.

Southern Maine senior Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H.) tied the score at 2-2 at 8:52 with an unassisted goal, her first of the season.

The teams played nearly 30 scoreless minutes before junior Lynn Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) gave USM a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal.  Junior Ally Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) picked up the lone assist.

Manhattanville piled up a 34-22 edge in shots on goal, including a 26-14 advantage over the final two periods.  Junior goalie Olivia Drew (York, Maine) picked up her third win of the season making 20 saves while USM rookie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) stopped 31 shots before being lifted with 45 seconds to play for the extra attacker in an attempt to score a tying goal.

Southern Maine travels to Salve Regina University on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) for an NEHC game.  Manhattanville will host the University of New England on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
