Worcester State Sweeps By Southern Maine 9-0

Huskies at UMass Boston on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.)

            GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Worcester State University Lancers swept all nine matches Saturday afternoon to take a 9-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Gorham High School courts.

            The victory snapped a two-match losing skid for the Lancers, and evened their record at 3-3 overall (1-1 in LEC play).  The Huskies fell to 2-4 overall (0-3 in LEC).

            After sweeping the three doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores, the Lancers proceeded to take all six singles matches.  WSU sophomore Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and USM senior co-captain Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) played the closest singles match.  Khafaga took the first set 6-3 before Estes rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set to force a 10-point super tiebreaker.  Khafaga won the super tiebreaker 10-6 to capture the point.

            Junior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass./Quabog), senior Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.), sophomore Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.), Khafaga and senior Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) earned two points apiece for the Lancers.

            Southern Maine is back on the courts this coming Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) when its travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a Little East Conference match.  Worcester State will entertain Salem State University for an LEC match to be played at Clark University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
