DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) and senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored the first points of the match with an 8-0 win at second doubles and the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 9-0 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
Southern Maine earned its eighth straight win to improve 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the Little East Conference. It is the second straight season that the Huskies burned through the LEC earning the outright regular season title. Western Connecticut falls to 3-7 with the loss and 1-4 in the LEC.
Curley and St. John defeated the WCSU tandem of freshmen Ben Cortez (Danbury, Conn./) and Jeff Hensley (Naugatuck, Conn.) to start the Huskies. Southern Maine won all three doubles points to head into singles play ahead 3-0.
Junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) notched the Huskies' fourth point of the match with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles defeating Colonial junior Romeny Tiru (Waterbury, Conn./Sacred Heart). Senior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) scored USM's match-deciding fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles downing Jason Hipona (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional).
Southern Maine, the top seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament, and will host a semifinal game on Thursday, April 30 (tba) against an opponent to be named. Western Connecticut travels to UMass Dartmouth on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference match.
