GORHAM, Maine – Junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and senior Scott Gagne's (Lewiston, Maine) 8-2 win at first doubles helped the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 start through doubles play en route to a 9-0 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Wednesday afternoon.
The win is the seventh straight for Southern Maine, which remains undefeated in the Little East Conference at 5-0 and improves its overall record to 9-2. With its win over the Bears, Southern Maine also clinches the top seed in the 2015 Little East Conference tournament. The loss is the ninth straight for Bridgewater State dropping its record to 0-9 and 0-5 in the LEC.
The Huskies won both the second and third doubles points by the score of 8-1 before sweeping through the singles points for their fourth 9-0 match win of the season. Adams and Gagne combined to defeat the BSU tandem of senior Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and Michael Delisle (Berkley, Mass./Somerset).
Sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) clinched the match for the Huskies, scoring his team's fifth point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over sophomore Justin Haley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) at third singles. Senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) set up Curley for the match deciding point, downing junior Jacob Frazee (Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.
Southern Maine will complete its regular season on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it travels to Western Connecticut State for a Little East Conference match. The Huskies will then await their pairing for the 2015 Litlte East Conference Championship Tournament. Quarterfinals of the tournament will begin on Tuesday, April 28. Bridgewater State hosts Salem State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in an LEC contest.
