Southern Maine Wins Fifth Straight Defeating RIC 9-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and senior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) rolled to an 8-0 win at first doubles and then went on to pick up victories at first and second singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 shutout victory over the Rhode Island College Anchormen Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.
 

The win is the fifth straight for the Huskies improving their record to 7-2 overall and maintaining a perfect 3-0 mark in Little East Conference play.  Suffering its second straight loss, Rhode Island College falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

 

Adams and Gagne improved to 7-2 at first doubles and 3-0 in the LEC with their 8-0 victory over the RIC tandem of junior Tim Holzinger (Foster, R.I.) and sophomore Brett Taggert (North Kingstown, R.I.).  The Huskies swept through the doubles points as sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) and senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and junior Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Joseph Gagliardi (Seekonk, Mass.) picked up wins at second and third doubles respectively.

 

Curley and St. John defeated RIC freshmen Lee Tiberie (Smithfield, R.I.) and Josh Pimental (Smithfield, R.I.) 8-2 at second doubles, while Berry-Sandelin and Gagliardi downed Anchorman sophomore Chris Klawitter (Brooklyn, Conn.) and senior Brian Gil (North Providence, R.I.) 8-0.

 

Ahead 3-0 heading into singles action, USM swept all six flights for the 9-0 win.  Adams led the way from the top of the lineup with a 6-0, 6-1 win over HOlzinger to remained undefeated in 2015 at 9-0.  Gagne was equally as dominant at second singles defeating Taggert 6-2, 6-0 at the second position. 

 

Southern Maine will play its first home match in the month of April on Tuesday (3:30 p.m) when it hosts Litlte East Conference opponent Salem State.  Rhode Island College travels to LEC opponent Western Connecticut State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
