Southern Maine Trumps Castleton State 9-0

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team won five out of its six singles matches by a score of 6-0, 6-0 and rolled to a 9-0 win over the Castleton State College Spartans Saturdayday afternoon in a non-conference match.

With as many wins in as many matches, Southern Maine is now 2-0 early in the 2015 season.  Castleton suffered its second consecutive loss to stand at 0-2.

The Huskies opened the match winning all three doubles points, highlighted by an 8-6 win at second doubles by seniors Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Ian Karby (Westbrook, Maine).  St. John and Karby combined to fight off the Spartan dup of sophomores Kyle Martin (West Rutland, Maine) and Tyler Wilcox (Queensbury, N.Y.). 

In singles actions, junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and senior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at first and second singles, respectively.  Adams defeated Martin, while Gagne defeated Castleton senior Christopher Belanger (Lewiston, Maine) as the Huskies rolled through the singles points en route to the shutout win.  

Southern Maine remains on the road and will face non-conference opponent MIT on Thursday (4:00 p.m.).  Castleton State hosts Johnson State on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
