PORTLAND, Maine – After a 3-0 start through doubles competition, the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to win the six available singles points en route to a 9-0 win over the UMass Boston Beacons in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Racket and Fitness Center.
With the win, Southern Maine earns its third straight victory to improve to 5-2 and starts the Little East Conference portion of its schedule at 1-0. The loss drops the Beacons to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the LEC.
Junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and senior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) led the Huskies from the top of the doubles lineup defeating the UMass Boston tandem of freshman Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Charles Lai (Boston, Mass./Boston College HS), 8-1. Senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) also earned an 8-1 victory at second doubles downing junior Greg Fleming (Harwich Port, Mass./Harwich Senior) and sophomore Jack Wang (Suzhou, China/Suzhou First). At third doubles, Junior Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) and junior Sebastien Taylor (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) downed senior Vlad Leopard (Carnikava, Latvia/Canton (Mass.)) and freshman Adhirath Bhatotia (New Delhi, India/Shri Ram School Aravali) 8-2.
Leading 3-0, Southern Maine won the third and fourth singles matches to secure the win and a 5-0 lead. Curley worked his way to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fleming in the third flight, while St. John took down Wang 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles for the match-deciding point. From there, USM won second, first, fifth and sixth singles for the 9-0 win.
Southern Maine remains in LEC competition for its next match when it travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). UMass Boston hosts Suffolk University in non-conference action on Thursday (3:00 p.m.)
