HANOVER, N.H. – Highlighted by an 8-0 win at second doubles from senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) the University of Southern Maine Huskies took a 2-1 lead through the doubles points and then rolled on to win four out of six singles matches to earn a 6-3 win over the Colby-Sawyer Mules in a non-conference men's tennis match Friday evening at Dartmouth College's Boss Tennis Center.
With the win, Southern Maine earns its second straight victory to improve to 4-2 prior to heading into Little East Conference play. Colby-Sawyer drops to 3-8 with the loss.
Junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and senior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) downed sophomore Cass McCann (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada/Lillian Osborn) and freshman Rico Bailey (Mattapan, Mass./Boston Community Leadership) 8-1 at first doubles, while St. John and Curley earned their dominant win over senior Justin Pinard (Essex, Vt.) and freshman Andrew Peloquin (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield).
In singles action, Southern Maine won the first four flights. Adams defeated McCann 6-2, 6-2 at the top of the lineup, while Gagne took a concise 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bailey at second singles. Curley won the third flight defeating Peloquin 6-4, 6-2, while St. John gutted out a 6-2, 7-6 (15-13) win over senior Sergio Spassof (Pallini, Greece/ACS Athens) at fourth singles.
Southern Maine hosts UMass Boston in its Little East Conference opener on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). The match will be held at the Racket and Fitness Club in Portland, Maine. Colby-Sawyer hosts Lyndon State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
