Box Score Huskies Open LEC Play Saturday at Eastern Connecticut
GORHAM, Maine -- Eleven players scored goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies cruised to an 18-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Hannaford Field.
The win improved the Huskies' overall record to 3-1 as they prepare for their Little East Conference opener on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) at Eastern Connecticut State University. The Beavers remain winless through six outings. The Beavers next game is next Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) at Husson University.
Rookie Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) led the Huskies' scoring parade with five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Austin Watts (Westbrook, Maine) and sophomore Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) had three goals apiece. Watts also had an assist for a four-point day. Sophomores Tyler Jamison (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Keegan Smith (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) each chipped in two goals and one assist.
Rookie goalies John Bossi (Billerica, Mass.) and Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) split the goaltending chores for the Huskies. Bossi earned his first collegiate win playing the first two quarters and recording one save. Bessette came on the second half to post three saves.
Junior Nathan Chase (Wells, Maine) tallied the lone UMF goal in the third quarter. Sophomore goalie Joseph Maldonado (Fresno, Calif.) stopped 15 shots.
Five different players scored in the first quarter as the Huskies opened up a 5-0 lead. Watts, Wing, rookie Sam Hornblower (Portland, Maine/Deering), DelGiudice and Jamison all found the net before 15 minutes expired.
Southern Maine added six more goals to its lead in the second quarter to have a comfortable 11-0 lead at the break.
Junior Eddie Barrasso (Wilmington, Mass.), Wing and Watts scored in the first two minutes of the third quarter to push the lead to 14-0. Watts scored his second of the quarter to make it 15-0 before Chase spoiled the shutout bid with 7:45 left in the quarter.
Southern Maine piled up a huge advantage in total shots (67-9) and ground balls (53-24).
