CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles points were played and rolled to an 8-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's tennis match Thursday afternoon at the J.B. Carr Indoor Tennis Facility.
MIT extends its season-opening win streak to six matches and improves to 6-0 with the victory over Southern Maine. The Huskies, suffering their first set back of the season, stand at 2-1.
In the closest doubles match of the day, MIT sophomore Kenny Gea (Irvine, Calif.) and junior Dennis Garcia (Corpus Christi, Texas/Mary Carroll) defeated sophomore Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) and senior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) 8-6 in second doubles to earn all three doubles points.
Huskies' junior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned USM's lone point of the match with a hard fought win at the top of the singles lineup. Adams defeated MIT junior Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) 6-7, 6-4, 10-8.
Southern Maine travels to Colby College on Monday (5:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match.
