Box Score Shapiro Makes 43 Saves, Ganley Nets 1st Career Goal
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Senior Joey Agliato (Hauppauge, N.Y.) scored early in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and the Saint Anselm College Hawks held off the University of Southern Maine Huskies for a 2-1 victory in ECAC Men's East action Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks, unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1), improved to 9-12-3 overall and 7-8-2 in league play. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 5-18-0 overall and 2-14-0 in ECAC East games.
Agliato potted the game winner at 3:44 when he received a pass from junior Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) and deposited the puck behind USM rookie goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) for his third goal of the season. Sophomore Brendon Kerrigan (Boston, Mass.) also earned an assist.
Despite being out shot 20-2 in the third period, the Huskies managed to lift Shapiro for the extra attacker with 1:25 to play, but were unable to get an equalizer to force the game into extra time.
The teams played a scoreless first period with the Hawks piling up a 17-6 edge in shots on goal, but Shapiro kept the Huskies level with the Hawks.
Saint Anselm senior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) broke the scoreless deadlock at 3:00 of the second period when he broke up a USM play at the blue line and skated in alone on Shapiro to tally an unassisted short-handed goal.
Five minutes later, junior Bob Ganley (Weymouth, Mass.) got the Huskies even with a power-play goal. Ganley traded passes with classmate Daniel Mattsson (Uppsala, Sweden) before beating Saint Anselm rookie goalie Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) for his first collegiate goal. The goal snapped a long scoreless drought for the Huskies.
Shapiro finished the game recording 43 saves before heading for the bench for the extra skater. Joyce made 16 saves to earn his ninth win of the season. Saint Anselm had a 45-17 advantage in shots
