New England College Shuts Out Southern Maine 4-0

Box Score

Huskies Host Saint Anselm on Saturday (4:00 p.m.)

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goalie Sebastian Anderson (Sundyberg, Sweden) stopped 21 shots and four different players scored as the visiting New England College Pilgrims shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-0 in ECAC Men's East play Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

The win snapped a four-game winless stretch (0-3-1) for the Pilgrims, and improved their record to 4-7-2 overall and 3-5-0 in league play.  The Huskies fall to 2-11-0 overall and are winless in the league in eight tries.

Anderson provided the visitors with steady goaltending throughout the game to earn his second shutout of the season, and the sixth of his career.

The Pilgrims jumped out quickly scoring twice in the opening six minutes.  Rookie Bryce Nielsen (North Andover, Mass.) put the Pilgrims on top at 1:49 converting a feed from sophomore Conor Crouse (West Haven, Conn.) into his fourth goal of the season.

Just over four minutes later, rookie Joe Osaka (Tokyo, Japan) redirected a high shot from the right point past USM freshman goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) for a 2-0 lead.

Junior Kyle Manlow (Murretta, Calif.) made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at 12:59 of the second period.  Shapiro stopped a drive from the blue line by Nielsen, but the rebound went right to Manlow camped on the right side.

Crouse finished the scoring at 1:54 of the third period converting a breakaway for his first goal.  Crouse broke up the Huskies' offense at his defensive blue line, and then outskated everyone to go one-on-one with Shapiro.  Crouse faked to the forehand and went high with his backhander to beat Shapiro.

Shapiro stopped 29 shots as New England College piled up a 33-21 edge in shots on goal.

Southern Maine will host Saint Anselm College tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) for another ECAC Men's East game.  New England College travels to the University of New England.
