Bowdoin Downs Southern Maine 6-1

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Rookie Camil Blanchet (Swanzey, N.H.) had a goal and three assists to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 6-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men's ice hockey action Wednesday evening at Watson Arena.

The victory snapped a two-game winless streak (0-1-1) as the Polar Bears swept the season series and lifted their overall record to 10-5-3.  The Huskies dropped their second straight game to slide to 4-14-0.

The Polar Bears scored twice in each period and came within 24 ticks of shutting out the Huskies.

Sophomore Zach Kokosa (Aurora, Ill.) put the home side on top just 91 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal out of a scramble in front of USM rookie goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.).  Rookie Daniel McMullan (Ridgefield, Conn.) doubled the Polar Bears lead in the final minute of the first period converting a feed from Blanchet.

Bowdoin took advantage of its two power-play opportunities in the second period to expand its lead to 4-0.  Sophomore Mitch Barrington (Cambridge, Ont.) scored at 9:16 after taking a pass from classmate Kendall Culbertson (Laguna Niguel, Calif.).  Blanchet also picked up an assist.  Barrington potted his second power-play goal, assisted by Blanchet, at 15:05.

Rookie Spencer Antunez (Willoughby Hills, Ohio) and Blanchet scored in the third period to push the Polar Bears' advantage to 6-0.  Antunez scored on a wraparound move while Blanchet scored a power-play marker with less than four minutes to play.

Junior Chad O'Brien (Johnstown, Pa.) broke up Bowdoin rookie goalie Paul Cronin's (Norwell, Mass.) bid for his first career shutout just 24 seconds short of full time scoring a short-handed goal.  Junior Bob Ganley (Weymouth, Mass.) earned the lone assist on O'Brien's fourth goal of the season.

Cronin finished the night with 16 saves.  Shapiro played the first two periods and stopped 29 shots.  Rookie Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine) came on to play the final period and stopped 16 shots.

The Polar Bears out shot the Huskies, 47-17, and converted three of five power-play opportunities.

Southern Maine is back in action this Friday (7:00 p.m.) hosting the University of New England in an ECAC Men's East game.  Bowdoin is off until February 6 when it hosts Hamilton College.
