Box Score Huskies Face Saint Michael's on Saturday
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Junior Bo Webster (Aurora, Ontario) scored a pair of goals as the Hobart College Statesmen overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 6-2, in the opening game of the New Year's College Hockey Classic at Herb Brooks Arena.
The win was the third in the last four games for the Statesmen, and improved their overall record to 7-4-0. The Huskies dropped to 1-10 overall.
Webster scored twice in the second period as the Statesmen tallied four goals to erase the Huskies' 1-0 first-period lead. Sophomore Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and senior Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy) had the other second-period goals.
Senior Bronson Kovacs (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) and rookie Jordan Haskell (Stansbury Park, Utah) scored in the third period for the Statesmen.
Junior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ontario) and senior Stephen Gallo (Barnstead, N.H.) scored for the Huskies.
Dymock's third goal of the season, coming after a pass from Gallo, gave the Huskies the lead just 3:49 into the game. Rookie goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) protected the lead through the remainder of the period stopping all nine Statesmen shots.
Bingaman knotted the score at 2:06 of the second period converting assists from Kovacs and sophomore Bobby Sokol (Belle Vernon, Pa.). Webster gave the Statesmen the lead for good at 3:48 with his fifth goal of the season. Traversa scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 7:32 while the Statesmen were short-handed. Webster completed the Statesmen's four-goal outburst in the period with a power-play goal at 16:52.
Kovacs netted a 5-on-3 power-play goal 3:35 into the third period to push the lead to 5-1. Gallo later came out of the penalty box to score his second goal of the campaign off a feed from rookie Patrick Magliano (Pelham, N.H.) at 5:25. Haskell closed the scoring with the Statesmen's third power-play goal of the game at 15:35. Sophomore Carl Belizario (Dorval, Quebec) picked up an assist on both Statesmen goals.
Sophomore goalie Tim Keegan (Lexington, Mass.), playing his first game of the season, earned the win for the Statesmen making 13 saves. Shapiro finished the game stopping 39 shots.
Hobart had four special-teams markers converting 3 of 7 power-play opportunities, and getting Traversa's short-handed goal. Hobart out shot the USM 45-15, including 36-8 over the final two periods.
Southern Maine will play Saint Michael's College tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) in the final day of the New Year's College Hockey Classic. Hobart will face off against Middlebury College (7:00 p.m.) in the final game of the tournament.
