Southern Maine Cruises Past Thomas 8-1 For Sixth Straight Win

GORHAM, Maine  – Sophomore Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) won a dominant 6-0, 6-1 match at first singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team to an 8-1 win over the Thomas College Terriers Tuesday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex. 

Adams' sixth consecutive singles victory coincided with the Huskies' sixth consecutive win to improve their record to 6-3 on the season. It is the second 8-1 victory over Thomas College this season for the Huskies.  Thomas College dips below .500 with the loss to stand at 3-4. Thomas entered the match on a two-match win streak.

Adams downed Terrier sophomore Tyler Small (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) at first singles to improve to 7-2 on the season from the top singles flight.  The Huskies won five out of the six singles points in the win.  Playing up in the lineup, Husky sophomore Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) earned a win in his first singles action of the season downing Thomas junior Caleb Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles.  Huskies' junior Romain Sauvageot (Cevnes, Rhone, France/Lycee OZANAM) picked up his third singles victory of the season defeating TC freshman Federico Trujillo (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) 6-2, 6-2.  Thomas' lone point came in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles as junior Eric Morin (Lewiston, Maine) defeated Husky junior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine).

Southern Maine led the match 3-0 after the doubles matches played.  Adams and Gagne downed Small and Morin at first doubles 8-2 in the closest doubles match of the day.  Sophomore Max Wilkey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Island School (Hong Kong)) and freshman Kyle Curley (Gorham Maine) earned an 8-0 win over the Terrier tandem of junior Malcolm Marshall (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Mora at second doubles, while junior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and senior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) also earned an 8-0 win at third doubles defeating junior Jonte Roussel (Brockton, Mass.) and Trujillo.

Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:00 p.m.) at UMass Boston to resume a suspended match.  USM led the Beacons 2-1 after doubles action in an LEC match up.  Thomas College hosts Castleton State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference match.
