Southern Maine Wins 11th Straight, Defeats Western Connecticut 9-0

PORTLAND, Maine  – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team extended its record-setting win streak to 11 matches defeating the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 9-0 in the Little East Conference tilt Saturday afternoon at the Racket and Fitness Club in Portland, Maine.

With its 11th straight win the Huskies improve their overall record to 11-3 and 5-0 in the Little East. The loss halts a three-match win streak for the Colonials and puts their record at 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Little East.

Senior captains Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) started the Huskies off on their 9-0 sweep winning the first points of the match with a solid 8-2 win at third doubles.  Dyke and Ross defeated the Colonial tandem of freshman Jason Hipona (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) and sophomore Romney Tiru (Waterbury, Conn./Sacred Heart) 8-2.  After Dyke and Ross' victory at third doubles, the Huskies went on to win the remaining doubles points 8-2 at first doubles and 8-0 at second doubles.

Southern Maine remained dominant in singles action capturing all six points.  Freshman Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) scored the fist Huskies' point in singles action defeating Colonial freshman Ricardo Fuentes (Newtown, Conn.) 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.  Huskies' sophomore Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned a strong win at first singles defeating senior Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) 6-4, 6-2. 

Southern Maine travels to Bridgewater State on Sunday (12:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match.  Western Connecticut concluded its regular season schedule and will begin the LEC tournament once seeds and pairings are determined.
