SALEM, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team turned in yet another strong performance to earn an 9-0 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference match Tuesday afternoon at the Central Campus Tennis Courts.
The win is the tenth straight for the Huskies who improve to 10-3 overall and remain undefeated in the Little East Conference at 4-0 with two conference matches left this season. Salem State remains winless in 2014 and stands at 0-7 and 0-2 in the Little East.
The Huskies were in control from the start grabbing a 3-0 lead after doubles action, giving up just one game. USM's first and third doubles teams won easily earning 8-0 wins. Sophomore Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) defeated Salem State freshmen Jake McKinnon (Winthrop, Mass.) and Sean Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) at first doubles, while seniors Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) and Corey Dyke (Winthrop, Maine/Monmouth Academy) defeated sophomore Kevin Lam (Salem, Mass.) and freshman Luke Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.). The Huskies' second doubles team of freshman Max Wilkey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Island School (Hong Kong)) and junior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) earned an 8-1 victory over sophomores Conner Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and David Dluznieski (Auburn, Mass.).
The Huskies' continued to roll in singles action claiming all six points. Adams was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at first singles over Erickson, while Gagne also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at third singles.
Southern Maine travels to Bridgewater State next Wednesday (3:30 p.m.). Salem State travels to Western Connecticut State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
