BOSTON -- Junior Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) had two goals and an assist to help the #6/#7 ranked University of Massachusetts Boston defeat visiting University of Southern Maine 5-1 in an ECAC Men's East game Saturday afternoon at the Beacons Ice Arena.
The win extended the Beacons' best-ever overall start to 10-0-0, and improved their unblemished conference record to 6-0-0. The Huskies fell to 1-8-0 overall and remain winless at 0-7 in league play.
Junior Frank DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) supported Sitterley with a goal and an assist. Senior Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) and rookie Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) netted the other Beacon goals. Junior Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) had two assists for the Beacons.
Junior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ont.) scored the Huskies lone goal with assists from sophomore Cole Klippenstein (Franklin, Tenn.) and senior Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine).
UMB junior goalie Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) stopped 25 of 26 shots to earn his third win of the season. USM rookie goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) made 32 saves in a losing effort.
Kuhn had the only marker of the first period despite the Beacons piling up a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal. Shapiro was outstanding keeping the Huskies in touch with the high-flying Beacons.
Sitterley scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:09 of the second period off assists from Finger and rookie Josh Haverstrom (Coral Springs, Fla.). DeAugustine's 5-on-3 power-play goal made it 3-0 at 9:26.
Dymock scored his second goal of the season at 15:39 as the Huskies converted on a power-play opportunity to pull back within two goals.
Larkin increased the Beacons' lead to three at 5:44 of the third period off assists from DeAugustine and junior Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.). Sitterley's second marker of the day, and eighth of the season, at 11:41 completed the scoring. Finger and junior Andrew Crawford (Medford, Mass.) picked up the assists.
Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) playing its third straight game against a Top Ten opponent hosting #10 Bowdoin College in a non-conference game. UMass Boston is off until January 4-5 when it hosts the 50th Annual Codfish Bowl.
