BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior Connor Quinn (Sudbury, Mass.) scored two goals as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears used a pair of two-goal outbursts to defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1, in non-conference men's hockey play Tuesday evening at Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears improved to 11-5-2 overall with the win.  The Huskies, winless in their last 13 games (0-8-5), slid to 4-11-5 overall.

The Polar Bears grabbed the lead in the opening minute of play as senior Kyle Lockwood (Ridgefield, Conn.) flipped a rebound over USM rookie goaltender Dylan Wells (Nashville, Tenn.) for his first goal of the season.  Less than 90 seconds later, Quinn netted the first of his two scores firing in the rebound of a shot by senior Harry Matheson (Kingston, Ont.).

After a scoreless second period, the Huskies cut the margin in half at 7:45 of the third period.  Sophomore Tyler Simmons (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) picked up the rebound of a shot from classmate Jeremy Griffin (Roswell, Ga.) and beat Bowdoin senior netminder Steve Messina (Newton, N.J.) for his first goal of the season.

The Huskies had a golden opportunity to gain an equalizing goal when they went on the power play with 3:37 to play, but it was the Polar Bears who found the back of the net.  Senior Colin Downey (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored a short-handed marker at 17:58 off a feed from Lockwood to make it 3-1.  The goal was Downey's team-leading 14th of the season.

Just six seconds later, Quinn tallied his second goal of the game, and 10th of the season, off an assist from Matheson to put the game out of reach.

Messina picked up his sixth win of the season making 31 saves.  Wells, playing his first game in nearly two months, stopped 39 shots.

Southern Maine is back on the road Friday traveling to the University of New England on Friday (7:00 p.m.) for an ECAC East game.  Bowdoin is off until February 7-8 when it travels to Hamilton College and Amherst College.
