GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Seth Adams (Brunswick, Maine/Mt. Ararat) earned his first collegiate win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at fifth singles as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers 9-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
With its second straight win, Southern Maine evens out its record at 4-4. The win marks the second time this season that the Huskies have defeated Thomas 9-0. Thomas drops to 4-5 with the loss.
The Huskies led from the start sweeping all three doubles points. Junior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and junior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine) and senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) each teamed to earn 8-0 victories at second and third doubles respectively. Ross and St. John defeated Thomas sophomores Gershom Renee (Hartford, Conn./Classical Magnet) and Jonte Roussel (Brockton, Mass.), while Dyke and Sproul downed freshmen Evan Boudreau (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) and Kade Strout (Richmond, Maine).
In singles action, senior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H.) led the way from the top with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Thomas sophomore Caleb Mora (Surry, Maine). Adams defeated Roussel to earn his first win and preserve the shut out victory for the Huskies.
Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut State on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Thomas College hosts Green Mountain College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference match.
