PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored an 8-1 win at second doubles to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 8-1 win over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts in Providence, R.I.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Little East. The Huskies secured the third seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament. The loss drops the Anchormen's record to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference. RIC will be the sixth seed in the LEC tourney and will travel to Southern Maine for the rematch.
The Huskies led the match 2-1 after the doubles points were played. Ross and St. John defeated junior Matt Collins (Rumford, R.I.) and sophomore Mike McCaffrey (Cumberland, R.I.) at second doubles, while freshman Sebastien Taylor (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) downed freshman Cory Duquette (Warwick, R.I.) and junior Ted James (West Greenwich, R.I.) at third doubles, 7-3, following an injury retirement.
The Huskies swept the singles points en route to the 8-1 victory. USM senior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) keyed the sweep in singles action, earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over junior Alex Werchaldo (Woonsocket, R.I.).
