GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at third singles to preserve the shut out as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Castleton State College Spartans 9-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match Sunday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
The win is the fourth straight for USM, which improves to 6-4 overall. The loss halts a four-match win-streak for the Spartans who dip to 8-3.
The Huskies dominated the opening doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) and Gagne led the way from the top of the order with an 8-1 win at first doubles defeating the Spartan tandem of junior Adam McCaffrey and freshman Mike Glasser. At second doubles, sophomore Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) and junior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) earned an 8-1 win, while junior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) teamed for an 8-0 win at third doubles.
Whitman took a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles over Castleton's Will Levine. St. John downed Glasser 6-1, 6-0 at second singles and Ross defeated junior Mike Divis 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. Dyke gutted out a 6-3, 6-2 win at fifth singles, while freshman Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
Southern Maine hosts Bridgewater State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Castleton State hosts MCLA on Thursday (4:00 p.m.).
