DANBURY, Conn. – After sweeping the first three doubles points, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team rolled through the six singles points to earn a 9-0 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at Westside Courts in Danbury, Conn.
The win is the third straight for USM, which improves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Little East. With the loss, Western Connecticut remains in the hunt for its first win of the season at 0-6 and 0-3 in the conference.
Senior junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) and sophomore Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) earned the toughest doubles point of the day with an 8-5 win over juniors Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, Conn.) and Ryan Klem (Newport, R.I./Southington) at first doubles.
In singles action, Whitman also had a battle in the top flight eventually defeating Bucknam in three sets 0-6, 6-4 and 10-4. Junior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.), senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and junior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) each at 6-0, 6-0 wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles respectively.
Southern Maine hosts Castleton State on Sunday 12:00 p.m. Western Connecticut hosts Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) Both matches are non-conference.
