GORHAM, Maine. – Senior Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and sophomore Jenna Willey (Windham, Maine) combined for an 8-5 win at first doubles to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a key 5-4 Little East Conference win over the Worcester State University Lancers Saturday afternoon.
The win stops a three-match losing streak for the Huskies and improves their record to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the Little East. Worcester State suffers its second straight loss to fall to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Both teams played in their final regular season match today. Worcester State and Southern Maine will face each other again in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Little East Conference Championship on Tuesday (tba). Worcester earned the fourth seed and will be the home team, while USM was awarded the fifth seed due to a tie-breaking procedure with a 3-5 record.
Moran and Willey defeated the Lancer tandem of freshman Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass./Quabog) and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) as the Huskies nabbed two of the three available doubles points. Sophomores Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) and Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) took an 8-3 win at second doubles securing the Huskies pivotal second point of the doubles matches defeating junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.).
Worcester scored an 8-6 win at third doubles as seniors Laura Sarkis (West Springfield, Mass.) and Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, Conn.) defeated USM freshmen Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional).
The Huskies' two doubles points proved to be the deciding factor in the match as the Lancers split the six singles matches evenly. Moran, Willey and Gallagher were the winners for Southern Maine at first, second and third singles respectively. Moran earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Candelieri, while Willey rallied from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win the final two 7-6, 6-4 over Jankins. Gallagher also earned a three-set victory defeating Lancer sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) 6-3, 0-6, 6-2
