GORHAM, Maine – Senior captain Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and sophomore Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) battled to an 8-5 win at second doubles to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 win over the Castleton State College Spartans in a non-conference men's tennis match Sunday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, the Huskies bounce back from a one-match set back to improve to 2-1 on the season. The loss stops a two-match win streak for Castleton State and drops its record to 2-3.
Caron and Ross defeated the Castleton State tandem of sophomore Matt Twyman-Trombly (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) and freshman Chris Belanger (Lewiston, Maine) at second doubles.
Caron went on to earn a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles while Ross also picked up a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win in fifth singles. Caron defeated sophomore Adam McCaffery (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) while Ross downed sophomore Mike Divis (Rutland, Vt.).
Southern Maine hosts Thomas College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). Castleton State travels to Lyndon State on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
