BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies scored three unanswered goals in the second period of play and sophomore goalie Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) made 25 saves in net as the Huskies defeated the host Babson College Beavers, 3-1, in an ECAC East men's ice hockey tilt at the Babson Skating Center on Friday night.

With their third straight win, the Huskies improved to 9-9-4 overall and 7-6-2 in league play. Meanwhile, the Beavers saw their seven-game unbeaten streak (4-0-3) come to an end as they fell to 7-12-3 overall and 7-5-3 in the ECAC East.

Babson controlled play for most of the opening period, although the Beavers would only have a 12-8 shot advantage to show for it heading into the first intermission.

Southern Maine grabbed the momentum with a dominating second period, as the Huskies netted three unanswered goals while boasting an 11-5 edge in shots. The first goal of the contest came just three minutes in, when junior Tom Gosselin (Lewiston, Maine) took a breakaway feed from freshman Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine) and lifted a shot into the upper right corner at 3:01. It was Gosselin's second goal of the season and it gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies made it 2-0 just two and a half minutes later, beginning when matching minors followed by another Babson penalty to give USM a 4-on-3 advantage.  Junior Jon Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ontario) then took consecutive feeds from freshman Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and senior captain Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and ripped a slapper from the left circle that caromed off the far post and in for his seventh goal of the winter at 5:33.

Southern Maine would cap off its second-period outburst at 10:03, when freshman Ben Pearl (Essex, Vt.) stole the puck at mid-ice and sent it ahead to classmate Brad McGovern (Haverhill, Mass.).  McGovern skated in alone on Babson senior goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) and found the upper right corner with a shot that caromed off the crossbar for his fifth of the year and a 3-0 Husky lead.

Babson netted its lone goal of the game early in the third period, as senior captain Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) stuffed home a rebound of first-year Andrew Bonazza's (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) shot on the power play at 6:05. However, Hoban's sixth tally of the season would be all Torris would allow on the night, as he finished with 25 saves.

Peabody played all but the final two minutes in net for Babson, making a total of 20 saves.

Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).  Babson entertains the University of New England on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
