Soar Gives USM 2-1 Win Over Trinity

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Brittany Soar (Boxborough, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season with 11:57 remaining in the third period to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in non-conference women's college ice hockey action Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

The win lifts the Huskies back to the .500 mark at 3-3-2 overall.  The Bantams slip to 3-2-2 overall.  The two teams will play again Saturday afternoon (4:00 p.m.).

Soar picked up a loose puck in the left wing circle and fired a turnaround shot that changed direction and beat Trinity junior goaltender Kristen Maxwell (Nashville, Tenn.).  Senior Ashley Grenier (South Berwick, Maine) and freshman Kaleigh Heath (Jericho, Vt.) picked up the assists on the play.

The Huskies killed off a Bantam power play later in the period, and freshman goalie Jenn Fuller (Houston, B.C.) kicked out all eight Bantam shots in the final period to preserve the win.  Fuller finished the night stopping 20 of 21 shots to earn her first collegiate victory.

The teams traded goals in the first period, then played a scoreless second period.  Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead at 5:37 as sophomore Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season potting the rebound of a shot by classmate Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.).  Maxwell stopped Bent's bid in tight, but the rebound slid out to Lane 15 feet out front.  Lane deposited the puck past Maxwell into the right side of the net.

Sophomore Lucy Robinson (Toronto, Ontario) drew the Bantams even at 11:41 with her third goal of the season.  Junior Emily Kleidon (Oakdale, Minn.) and senior Rebecca Rosen (Syosset, N.Y.) earned the assists.  Kleidon kicked the puck to Rosen at the left point where upon Rosen fired a shot towards goal that Robinson deflected past Fuller.

Maxwell, who was lifted for the extra attacker with 42 seconds to play, recorded 21 saves.
