No. 8 Manhattanville Downs Southern Maine 6-1

            STAMFORD, Conn. – Seniors Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Katie Little (Victoria, B.C.) each scored two goals to lead the eighth-ranked Manhattanville College Valiants to a 6-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in ECAC Women's East action Saturday afternoon at Terry Conners Rink.

            The eight-ranked Valiants, unbeaten in their last seven games (6-0-1), improved to 6-2-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play.  The Huskies slipped to 2-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in ECAC East play.

            Morrison gave the Valiants the early lead when she netted her third goal of the season 67 seconds into the game.  Little doubled the advantage at 17:24 converting a pass from Morrison into a power-play marker.  The Valiant piled up a 15-2 edge in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

            Sophomore Trenah Stauffer (Salmon, Idaho) tallied the second of three Valiant power-play goals at 10:38 of the second period to make it 3-0.

            Southern Maine got on the scoreboard at 13:23 as freshman Sarah Timmons (Fall River, N.S.) tallied her third goal of the season.  Junior Bridget O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) earned the lone assist.

            Little's second goal of the game, coming on the power play, made 4-1 before the end of the period.

            Morrison and senior Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario) add goals six minutes apart in the third period to account for the final score.

            Seniors Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec) and Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask.) and sophomore Alla Traun (Edina, Minn.) each had two assists for the Valiant.

            Junior goaltender Mary Evans (Detroit, Mich.) stopped 15 of 16 shots in the Manhattanville net to earn her fourth win of the season.  Sophomore Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) played the opening period for USM registering 13 saves.  Freshman Jenn Fuller (Houston, B.C.) played the final 40 minutes and recorded 22 saves.

            Manhattanville finished the game 3 for 7 on the power play and with a 41-16 advantage in shots on goal.

            Southern Maine returns home for a two-game, non-conference series on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (4:00 p.m.) against Trinity College.  The series with Trinity will close out the first-semester portion of USM's 2012-13 schedule.  Manhattanville will host top-ranked Plattsburgh State next Friday (7:00 p.m.).
