Huskies Shutout Pilgrims 4-0 for First Win of the Season

HENNIKER, N.H. – Junior goalie Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) had a 21-save shutout to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team a 4-0 win over New England College on Friday evening. The win is Jones' first as a Husky. Several other Huskies had milestones as freshman Charlotte Hughes (Mississauga, Ontario) scored her first career goal, freshman Gracelyn Koch (Maple Grove, New Brunswick) recorded the first two assists of her career and sophomore Sophia Capone (Cumberland, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) logged her first point as a Husky with an assist. The win is also historic for Southern Maine as a program as it is their first Little East Conference victory.

The Huskies' veteran core also got in on the action as senior captain Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) each recorded two assists and graduate student Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial), senior captain Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy) and senior captain Caroline Thompson (Crapaud, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) also scored goals.

How It Happened:
  • Chagnon received a pass from Koch and backhanded it into the net for her first goal of the season 3:25 into the first period with the Huskies on the power play. The assist is the point of Koch's intercollegiate career. Each team put seven shots on goal in the first period. The Pilgrims played strong defense and blocked five shots in the period.
  • Donahue doubled Southern Maine's lead with a goal 4:33 into the second period. Stewart and Capone recorded the assist. Stewart grabbed a rebound and sent a pass back to Capone, who then slid the puck over to Donahue to set up the goal.
  • Southern Maine scored twice in less than a minute in the third period to take a 4-0 lead. Hughes scored the first 13:55 into the period with Koch assisting. Thompson then added another goal 36 seconds later off the rebound of a shot by Stewart that hit the pipe. Sophomore Josie Arrants (Rock Springs, Wy./Lovell Academy) also had an assist on the second goal.

Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies had a 48-21 lead in shots on goal.
  • New England College led 33-22 in faceoff wins.
  • Chagnon's goal is the 47th of her career and her 67th career points. She is now tied with Amy Matuewezski (1999-03) for second in program history in goals. Tonight's goal also gives her sole possession of seventh on the program's career points list and is the ninth power play goal of her career, tying her for fifth in program history. She has also extended her program record for game-winning goals to 16.
