BOSTON – The University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons got goals from five different players and strong goaltending from freshman Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) to defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 5-2, in ECAC Men's East play Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center.
The win was the Beacons fifth straight and extended their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1). The Beacons, off to their best start since the 1987-88 campaign, improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league play.
The Huskies dropped their second straight game to fall back to .500 at 4-4-0 overall. The Huskies are 3-4-0 in league play.
The Beacons took a 2-1 lead in the opening period as freshmen Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) and Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) sandwiched a goal by USM junior Angelo Vrachnas (St. James, N.Y.). MacIntyre put the home side ahead with his sixth goal of the season at 10:19. Vrachnas tied the score, set up by freshman Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine), equalized at 15:38. Miller scored his fourth goal of the season in the final minute to give the Beacons the lead heading into the locker room.
Guimond tied the game midway through the second period, set up by White and Vrachnas. The deadlock lasted less than three minutes as freshman Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, assisted by MacIntyre, with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
UMass Boston added two insurance markers, the last going into an empty net, in the final period. Rookie Max Reavis (Omaha, Neb.) scored at 9:16 to make it 4-1, and classmate Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) closed the scoring in with the empty netter with 45 seconds to play.
Andrews made 30 saves to backstop the Beacons and earn his sixth win of the season. Freshman Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wis.) stopped 19 shots before being lifted for the extra attacker with 1:30 remaining.
Southern Maine will be back in action on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Bowdoin College in a non-conference game. UMass Boston is off until January 5 when they host Wentworth in the first round of the 48th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament.
