NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Senior forward Tory Allan (Davidson, Sask.) and sophomore forward Gerard McEleney (Canton, Mass.) each scored twice, while sophomore goaltender Matic Marinsek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) stopped all 10 shots he faced to pick up a shutout in his first career start to lead the No. 2-ranked Norwich University men's hockey team to a 6-0 win over the University of Southern Maine on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Junior forward Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta) and Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) also added goals for the Cadets as they improve to 2-0-0 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 1-2-0.
Norwich opened the scoring at the 9:31 mark when Duszynski sniped a shot top shelf over USM goalie Josh Hillegas' (Middleton, Wis.) glove off assists from Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) and Zac Fulton (East Thetford, Vt.) to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting Southern Maine 9-2 in the opening 20 minutes, that's the only goal Norwich could put on the board and the two teams headed into the first intermission with NU holding a 1-0 lead.
The Cadets added to their lead though at the 7:02 mark of the second period when McEleney scored his first goal of the night by flipping the puck on his backhand over a sprawled out Hillegas on a breakaway.
Allan netted his first goal of the night in the final minute of the second period by tapping home a rebound after an initial shot from Corey Hale (Montreal, Quebec) at the point was stopped by Hillegas to make it 3-0 Norwich heading into the second intermission.
McEleney scored 2:38 into the third period to stretch the lead to 4-0 when he slammed home a rebound on the weak side after an initial shot from Chris Gour (Whitby, Ontario) was blocked by Hillegas.
Norwich continued to keep the pressure on as Mulvey scored his second goal of the year shorthanded by tapping home a pass from Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) off a 2-on-1 rush. Erik Lyrvall (Falun, Sweden) was also credited with an assist.
Allan capped the scoring at the 17:17 mark with his second goal of the night off an assist from Mulvey.
Marinsek made his first collegiate start and picked up his first college win and shutout by stopping all 10 shots he faced. He stoned junior Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.) on a breakaway in the second period to preserve the shutout and keep the Huskies at bay. Hillegas took the loss for Southern Maine after making 22 saves.
Norwich extended its home unbeaten streak to 31 straight games with the victory and will look to stay perfect on the season Saturday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) when the Cadets host the University of New England. Southern Maine will travel to Saint Michael's College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
